Your Atmosphere account holds your identity and your data, and works across dozens of apps. Portal is where you manage it. mu is our own social app, open to anyone with an Atmosphere account. All three are hosted in Europe and built so that you can leave whenever you want.

An Atmosphere account is your identity on the open social web. It holds your data across all the Atmosphere apps you use, your follows, and the records that prove they are yours.

  • Your identity, not the app's

    Technically it is a "personal data server", which is the piece of the Atmosphere that stores your data and vouches for who you are. Practically it means your account is not the property of whichever app you happen to be using. You sign in to mu with it, or to any other app on the network, and the app borrows your identity rather than owning it.

  • Pick your username

    When you sign up you choose your username. We have two options: eurosky.social or mu.social. You can also use your own domain if you want, such as myname.com. Either way it is the same account, hosted by Eurosky in Europe, and it works in every app on the network.

  • Hosted in Europe

    It is hosted in a data centre operated by Hetzner, a German provider, and runs on 100% renewable energy. Accounts are backed up with OVH, a French cloud provider.

  • Portable by design

    If you leave, you take everything. Your account, your followers, your posts and all your data move with you to another provider, and nothing about the design makes that difficult. We build for the exit as well as the entrance.

The Atmosphere is built on a set of rules called the AT Protocol, an open standard in the way that email is an open standard. Anyone can build on it, nobody owns it, and the apps built on it all speak to each other. The network of those apps is what we call the Atmosphere, and more than forty-five million people are on it.

Your Atmosphere account works across all of it: the same identity, the same followers and the same posts, whichever app you open. Here are some to start with.

  • Everything about your account

    The Portal is the front end for your Atmosphere account. It is where you access settings to change your username and password, check which applications you have authorized, and discover apps you can use with your account. You can also deactivate or delete your account there.

  • More to come

    The Portal is in active development and we are adding new features, such as our file explorer, which lets you navigate the data stored on your account. You can try it out now.

mu is a place to post, read, and follow conversations across the open social web. It’s open source, free, and hosted and run in Europe.

We will never sell your personal data or build advertising profiles of our users.

  • Freedom of movement, on the internet

    Because mu is an Atmosphere app, your account is not locked to it. You can sign in with an account from Eurosky, Bluesky, or anywhere else on the network, and if you decide mu is not for you, you take your identity, your followers and your posts with you when you go.

    Rich global content and feeds, powerful content filtering tools, a customizable news feed drawn from credible sources, an account verification system that does not depend on paying anyone, and most importantly a digital pet to accompany you. You can now also get your own mu.social username!

Moving from somewhere else

If you already have a Bluesky account, you can bring it across to Eurosky without losing your followers or your posts. Tens of thousands of people have already done it.
